Life is Bluetiful when ….
*You see your baby’s face for the first time and your heart and your world expand to dimensions you never dreamed possible.
*You feel the warmth of your puppy’s body as you wrap your arms around her and she rests her head on your shoulder with a big sigh.
*You emerge from the house after a long cold winter, blinking as you feel the warmth of the sun for the first time in forever. Or maybe it just felt like forever.
*You sink your feet into the sand, listen to the waves roll into the shoreline, smell the tang of salt in the air, and let your breath escape in utter contentment.
*You have amazing conversations with your children, who are now actually adults. They might be sort of grown up, but you will always have wisdom to share and loving support to lend them.
*You laugh until you cry with your best friend.
*You realize you’ve succumbed to the hype about Game of Thrones, watch every minute like a fan girl, and are utterly unapologetic about it.
*You suffer the loss of your last surviving parent and despite the grief, realize you’re strong enough to keep moving, keep loving, keep finding the joy.
*You embrace the fact that you truly do find pleasure in the simple things: a great joke, a touching video, an excellent meal (even better if you didn’t make it yourself), the smell of fresh laundry, an ice cold glass of water, a snuggle with your dogs, a hug from your children.
*You realize you’re growing older somewhat gracefully and looking forward to what the future will bring.

Karen Stollery is a Somerset County resident. She is married with three sons, ages 20, 24 and 27. She’s still adjusting to the idea that her children are adults. So are they. She was a newspaper reporter and freelance writer for many years. She currently works as an instructional assistant in a high school. She’s enjoying high school much more as an adult than she ever did as a teenager. She is grateful to her friend Allison for the chance to contribute to this blog.
